ANSI Standards

ANSI standards, and PSAI’s involvement in establishing them, help raise the bar and improve the reputation of our industry.

As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the nonprofit American National Standards Institute (ANSI) oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector of commerce. Many trade associations work with ANSI to set standards in the areas of expertise.

The PSAI is an ANSI-accredited standards developer. You can review our standards development procedures here.

If you are interested in becoming involved in standards development for the portable sanitation industry, please contact Karleen Kos.

The PSAI has published three standards concerning the number and placement of portable units, hand washing stations, and requirements for related equipment. The standards are free for Members. Click the links below to login and access the standards. For nonmembers, the standards are available for purchase through PSAI by clicking here.

ANSI/PSAI Z4.1 Sanitation – In Places of Employment – Minimum Requirements

This standard applies to sanitation in all places of employment except where domestic, mining or common carrier transportation work is performed. It is relevant to portable sanitation because the minimum standards in all places of employment serve as the benchmark by which the adequacy of portable or temporary sanitation alternatives is measured.

ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 Sanitation – Non-sewered Waste – Disposal Systems – Minimum Requirements

This standard applies to sanitary waste disposal systems for all places of employment where such systems are not connected to a sanitary sewer, septic tank, or on site sewage disposal treatment facility. Its purpose is to assure that employees who don’t have access to indoor sewered toilets are provided with healthful and adequate alternatives.

ANSI/PSAI Z4.4 Sanitation – In Fields and Temporary Labor Camps – Minimum Requirements

This standard prescribes minimum environmental health requirements for camps (whether temporary or permanent) for temporary labor and for field sanitation. The purpose is to protect the health of these workers and, indirectly, the health of the public who may consume agricultural produce from these fields.
